Technology underpins all facets of modern life and evolves at relentless speeds. Over the course of our lifetime, we would have witnessed major breakthroughs that will have a significant impact and reach on society. Our purpose is to educate our students to participate in creating and applying contemporary knowledge and technological advances to make a difference.
We're solving societal problems through practical, affordable and sustainable solutions. A central question drives our research: how do we make technology, engineering and science more relevant to the wellbeing of human beings and the world? We produce impactful research with practical applications through our collaborative partnerships with universities, research bodies and industry leaders.
Each year, around 1,000 students graduate from our programmes. Our graduates are making a big difference to the world, whether developing low-carbon solutions, building water treatment plants in developing countries, helping to keep the nation's data systems secure, or educating the next generation of maths teachers.

Teaching
Our students learn in an environment geared towards practical skills, employability and challenging assumptions about how things work. To support them we have facilities including the Future Technology Centre, hydraulics lab, structures lab, Environmental Technology Field Station, Digital Forensics and Cyber Security Lab, the SAP Next Generation Lab, and the Atomic Force Microscope Lab.
Our lecturers are coaches and mentors, guiding students through their studies. All our courses are designed around the realities of working in industry and tackling societal challenges. Our Student Placement and Employability team helps students gain work experience and placement opportunities.
In addition to our full-time and part-time, campus-based and distance-learning degree and postgraduate degree courses, we offer a full programme short courses and continuing professional development courses that cover all aspects of the land, property and construction industries – including programs in construction law, fire safety, and health and safety.
Our teaching areas
Explore the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees we offer within the following areas.
Architecture, civil engineering and surveying courses
Develop practical problem-solving and creative skills to work in architectural design, building surveying, civil engineering or the conservation industry.
Computing courses
Start your career in network design, cyber security, digital analytics & other related fields with one of our computing degree courses. IBM, Jagex & BAE placements available.
Engineering courses
Make use of maths, engineering and your own ingenuity to plan, build and maintain the world we live in, on one of our engineering degree courses.
Mathematics and physics courses
From the financial sector to transportation and logistics, the skills you'll develop on one of our maths or physics degree courses are in demand.
Outreach
We engage young people’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects, and develop their interest in studying at a higher level, with our comprehensive outreach programme for schools and colleges.
We offer free sessions in which students discover the creative and problem solving nature of technology, and see how it fits in with the world around them. These sessions are designed to enrich a school or college curriculum, challenge preconceptions about technology, and give students a more informed opinion of the varied and exciting opportunities they could find in areas such as engineering, design, computing or physics.
Recent sessions have included:
- subject-specific talks from our academics about their research
- taster days for KS5 students, giving a flavour of what studying a particular course at university can offer
- activities at STEM fairs.
All our sessions are free, and we're happy to adapt them to meet specific needs of schools and colleges. If you'd like more information about our outreach offerings, or you're interested in taking part in one of our sessions (either at the University or in your school/college), please get in touch with James Allen, Faculty Outreach Coordinator: stemoutreach@port.ac.uk.
Research
We're a research leader among post-1992 universities, and we're building on our strong results in the Research Excellence Framework 2021. In REF 2021, 100% of our physics research outputs were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, 100% of our mathematical sciences research impact was rated as having considerable reach and significance, 83% of our computer science and informatics research impact was rated as outstanding or very considerable, and 75% of our research in engineering was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent.
We recently brought together businesses, councils and environmental groups to increase flood protection and sustainable drainage in housing developments through our ProSuDS project - 'Providing Real-world Opportunities for Sustainable Drainage Systems'.
We're also working with businesses, the public sector and other universities to increase solar power generation across England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands through our involvement with the 'Solar Adoption Rise in the 2 Seas' project, or 'SOLARISE'. SOLARISE aims to boost the adoption of solar energy in historical and public buildings and households, demonstrate future technologies through living labs, and lower the impact of the integration of solar energy on the electricity grid.
Our research areas
Discover the 8 research areas that sit within our Faculty of Technology – from Cosmology and Astrophysics, to Health Informatics.
Cosmology and Astrophysics
We're working to understand the cosmos and the fundamental physical laws at work – including gravity and the nature of spacetime. And how these laws of nature play out in the formation and evolution of stars and galaxies.
Health Informatics
We're improving the design of computer systems and wellbeing services to make the delivery of healthcare more efficient and cost-effective, and we're exploring how technology can influence lifestyle choices and reduce health risks.
Operational Research and Logistics
We're researching how we can apply quantitative methodologies to improve decision-making across a range of diverse fields of application.
Mathematical Sciences
We're delving into the mathematical complexity behind the processes and functions all around us, to develop solutions to problems in science and industry. Explore our mathematics research.
Physics
We're working to find solutions to global issues like climate change, infrastructure, transportation and new energy sources. Explore our physics research.
Civil Engineering
We're working to better understand the increasingly-complex and highly-pressurised nature of modern construction – from the rising prevalence of hybrid technology, to the challenges of managing component supply chains.
Computing
We're exploring how computational paradigms and algorithms can be used to make a positive difference in a variety of human-machine systems – and our research in computational intelligence is already making an impact.
Energy and Electronic Engineering
We're researching the most recent advances in energy and electronic engineering, including renewable energy systems, robotics and signal processing, and how to apply them to real problems.
Our research centres
Much of our exceptional research takes place within the following cross-disciplinary research centres – find out more below.
Centre for Healthcare Modelling and Informatics (CHMI)
We're working to develop technology that makes work more efficient for the organisations that form the National Health Service (NHS).
Centre for Operational Research and Logistics
We're using our expertise in analytics, system design, simulation, programming, and forecasting to help organisations around the world make better decisions.
Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation
Researchers at our Institute of Cosmology & Gravitation explore the evolution of our Universe and aim to inspire the next generation of scientists.
Our staff
Faculty staff support academics in devising the curriculum, designing and promoting courses and awarding successful students. We manage the committees that oversee research activity, and learning and teaching in technology. We also manage events and outreach programmes, and support staff and student wellbeing.
