Dr James Hand
Summary
I am an Associate Professor (formerly Reader) in Law, and one of the Associate Heads (Research), at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú's School of Law, and, along with a number of colleagues, I focus particularly on discrimination law. I have also published on such topics as , the role of the and on the Compensation Culture (my article on the latter has been cited in a number of journals and texts as well as in the Hamlyn Law Lectures (2010), the Master of the Rolls's Holdsworth Lecture (2012) and in a lecture by Sir Stephen Sedley to the Faculty of Advocates (2015)).
I am also, as of Summer 2023, one of the the three Co-Editors of the .
Biography
I joined the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú in 2003, was appointed Associate Senior Lecturer in 2007 and was appointed Reader in Law (0.5FTE) in September 2017.
As well as the papers detailed , most of which are available in post-print form on the research portal, I have written a number of posts for a range of law and legal related blogs/online sites including the UK Constitutional Law Association Blog, the UK Supreme Court Blog, Halsbury's Law Exchange, the LSE's British Politics and Policy blog, theConversation.com, the SLSA Blog and WonkHE. Research interests
My research interests are predominantly related to equality and discrimination law, with a particular focus on deficiencies within the Equality Act 2010, but other research interests include constitutional reform and aspects of access to justice. My current research interests include:
- the Equality Act 2010
- Diversity within the legal profession
- House of Lords reform
- the Research Excellence Framework.

Teaching responsibilities
My teaching interests centre around Discrimination Law and Employment Law (both of which I have taught to LLB, LLM and undergraduate business students). Other teaching areas have included Contract and Tort Law, introductory law units for business students, the careers and research management unit for law students and, in the distant past, taxation (for accounting and law students).
