Try something new

New year, new… something. We are all feeling the cold, settling back into routines, and thinking about the small changes we want to make for ourselves. January often comes with that quiet urge to reset and try something different, especially when the days feel long and we are finding our rhythm again.

One way to explore a fresh start is by experimenting with more plant-based meals. That idea has grown into a global movement called Veganuary, where people try vegan and plant-based meals throughout January and see what works for them. With plenty of tasty vegan options on campus and around the city, ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú is a great place for students to give it a go. No pressure, just an opportunity to begin the year with a small positive change.

I highly encourage anyone thinking of changing their diet to a more plant-based one to go for it. ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú is a great place to start your journey and explore everything veganism has to offer.

What is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a charity created to encourage people to try vegan eating for the month of January. Every year, millions of people around the world take part trying vegan meals for the month of January and seeing how plant-based choices fit into their lifestyle. In 2025, around 25.8 million people joined the challenge, taking part in a global effort to explore plant-based eating.

The charity provides free resources to make taking part simple and enjoyable. These include recipes, meal plans, nutritional guidance and daily tips to support anyone curious about trying vegan meals. Whether you are looking to experiment with a few new dishes or fully commit to the month, Veganuary gives you the tools and inspiration to make it happen.

Joining Veganuary is also a way to connect with a wider community of people exploring plant-based eating around the world. It is an opportunity to try something new, discover exciting ingredients, and see how small changes can have a positive impact on your health, the environment and your lifestyle.

Why go vegan?

Eating vegan foods isn’t automatically healthy. Some plant-based meals, like vegan burgers, pizzas, or desserts, can still be high in sugar, salt, or fat. But because veganism naturally focuses on fresh, plant-based ingredients, it can be a great way to eat more nutritious and wholesome meals.

Much research has gone into the health impacts of plant-based and vegan diets. Sources like the NHS, The Vegan Society, and UK research institutions have highlighted benefits for heart health, blood sugar control, and overall wellbeing. The advantages of including more plant-based meals in your diet are clear, and here are some of the ways it can support your health, lifestyle, and even the planet:

Feel more energised

Plant based meals can help you feel lighter and more focused throughout the day.

Support your long-term health

Research links vegan and plant-based diets with lower cholesterol, improved heart health and better blood sugar control.

Discover new flavours

Exploring vegan food encourages you to try new ingredients, recipes and cuisines.

Reduce your environmental impact

Eating more plants can lower your carbon footprint and overall environmental impact.

Save money

Staples like beans, lentils, pasta and seasonal vegetables often cost less than meat-based options.

Join a global movement

Veganuary connects you with millions of people worldwide trying plant-based meals for a month.

How to eat vegan at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and beyond

At the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú, we’re proud to support a vibrant vegan community. Since 2019, we’ve been recognised by PETA as one of the UK’s top 20 vegan-friendly universities. Around 40% of the food served on campus is now plant-based, making it easier than ever to enjoy vegan options wherever you are.

You can also connect with others who share your interest in sustainable, plant-based living through our Student Union's . The society hosts socials, cooking events and discussions, creating a welcoming space for anyone curious about trying veganism or already living it.

Beyond campus, the city’s vegan scene continues to grow. Most years ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Vegan Festival brings together local food vendors, ethical brands and guest speakers to celebrate plant-based living. It’s a great place to discover new products, meet local makers and get inspired to try something different.
