Learn to support people with long-term health conditions from industry experts and boost your career in clinical exercise physiology

Clinical Exercise Physiology (CEP) focuses on understanding how exercise can be used in the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of chronic diseases including cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and mental health conditions.

Within the UK, CEP supports healthcare through community-based exercise referral schemes and outpatient rehabilitation services such as cardiac, pulmonary, stroke, falls prevention, and cancer care. Despite strong evidence that exercise can produce health and mortality benefits comparable to some drug therapies, its integration into the routine care is more limited than it should be.

Clinical exercise physiologists play a key multidisciplinary role by conducting assessments, prescribing tailored exercise interventions, supporting behaviour change, and promoting physical activity across clinical and community settings. Professional standards, postgraduate training, and accreditation through CEP‑UK are helping to establish CEP as a regulated allied health profession within preventative and rehabilitative healthcare systems. Thus professional recognition is gaining international traction, leading to broader employment opportunities for clinical exercise physiologists without borders.
