UCAS Extra explained

An extra chance to apply for courses

If you want to add another choice to your UCAS application, then UCAS Extra is the way to do it. This might be useful if you've changed your mind since you submitted your UCAS application, didn't get the offers you want, or you want to add another application.

In 2025, UCAS Extra opens on 26 February, and closes 4 July.

How does UCAS Extra work?

When applying through UCAS, you can choose up to five options. These are called your choices.

Whether you're a UK, EU or international student:

You didn't use all your five choices

You don't need to use UCAS Extra if you did not use all your choices in your initial application, you can just sign in to your application and add another choice, as long as:

  • you're applying before 30 June
  • you’ve not accepted or declined any offers

You've used up all five of your choices

If you submitted your applications through UCAS and you used up all five of your choices you can add more choices one at a time if:

  • you've received decisions from all five course providers you applied to
  • you're not holding any offers — either you weren't accepted, or you decided to decline any offers you received

How to apply through UCAS Extra

If UCAS Extra is available to you, it will show as an option when you log in to your  account from 26 February. UCAS Extra is free to use.

When you apply to us through UCAS Extra, we'll aim to respond to you as quickly as possible with an update on your application. You'll usually hear from us within a couple of weeks.

Some of our courses fill up before UCAS Extra begins, but we encourage you to get in touch to check if there are vacancies on your preferred course before you apply.

How many UCAS Extra choices can I have?

You can use UCAS Extra as many times as you want, but you can only have one application in progress at a time. If you use UCAS Extra to apply for a course, you'll either have to wait for a decision, withdraw your application, or decline the offer.

Find the right course for you

Remember, when you're applying through UCAS Extra, you can only apply for one choice at a time, so don't rush into it. You can use our Course Search to find the perfect course for you that ticks all the boxes. Consider things like:

  • The modules you'll study and what you'll learn
  • The facilities, clinics and equipment you'll use
  • Teaching and support you'll get on the course.
